Hair Extensions 101
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HAIR EXTENSIONS
1. ARE YOUR EXTENSIONS REAL HUMAN HAIR OR SYNTHETIC HAIR?
Kylisstof hair extensions are made exclusively with 100% real, double drawn, remy human hair.
2. WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT REMY HAIR?
Remy hair is generally considered the highest grade of natural human hair available. With Remy hair extensions, the cuticles of each strand of hair are kept intact during the initial processing of the hair, and the strands of hair are then aligned with the cuticles of each strand all running in the same direction. Each of these two steps is essential. Maintaining the cuticles prolongs the lifespan of the hair by (a) not robbing that inner protein of the hair strand of its protective covering, and (b) by aligning the cuticles of each strand of hair in the same direction in order to minimize the damaging effects of tangling.
3. WHAT ARE CLIP-IN HAIR EXTENSIONS?
Clip-in hair extensions are the most straightforward, quick and easy way to get longer, thicker locks in minutes flat. Clip-in hair extensions come in what is called a “weft”, which is a collection of hair strands held together either with fabric (in the case of traditional clip-in hair extensions) or with thin bands of silicone (in the case of cutting-edge, seamless hair extensions).
Each hair weft comes with the clips already attached to it, meaning that you simply have to clip the wefts into your hair, without having to spend any extra money, waste any valuable time, or talk with your hairdresser. If you’re looking for instantly longer, thicker hair, and you don’t want to spend a fortune getting it, then clip-in hair extensions are the ideal solution for you.
4. WHAT ARE ALL OF THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF HAIR EXTENSIONS?
At Kylisstof, we think of hair extensions as being divided up into two main categories, which are:
- Semi-permanent hair extensions; and
- Temporary and easily removable hair extensions.
Semi-Permanent Hair Extensions
Within the category of semi-permanent hair extensions, there are two further sub-classes, which are:
- Strand-by-strand hair extensions, in which small packets of hair extensions are fastened to your own hair by way of a few different techniques; and
- Wefted hair extensions, in which wefts of hair extensions are anchored in place by way of a few different techniques.
Strand by Strand
The strand-by-strand hair extension category can be further sub-divided into two sub-classes, hot fusion and cold fusion. With hot fusion hair extensions, small strands of hair extensions are literally joined to the base of person’s own strands of hair using heated keratin U-tip bonds lined with silicone. With cold fusion hair extensions (also sometimes known as “micro link”), strands of hair extensions are attached to strands of an individual’s own hair either through the use of a keratin resin, or through the use of special fasteners which are then crimped tightly around the base of the hair extension strand and the base of the individual’s own hair strand.
The semi-permanent wefted hair extension category is further divided into four sub-classes of hair extensions: tape-in, glue-in, sew-in and micro-link skin wefts. We’ll only address tape-ins and sew-ins here as they are by far the most commonly used of the various semi-permanent wefted hair extension solutions. Tape-in hair extensions are essentially wefts of hair attached to a strip of adhesive tape. They are most typically applied by attaching this strip of tape to the base of a similar sized section of the individual’s hair, followed by the application of another piece of tape on the other side of the section, in effect sandwiching the hair between these two strips of tape. Sewn-in hair extensions are achieved through creating rows of an individual’s own tightly braided hair, onto which rows of hair wefts of hair extensions are sewn in.
Temporary and Easily Removable Hair Extensions
The only genuinely temporary and easily removable method of installing hair extensions are clip-in hair extensions.
5. PROS AND CONS OF EACH TYPE OF HAIR EXTENSION
As with anything in life, there are advantages and disadvantages to all of the hair extension types described above. Let’s go through each:
Hot Fusion/KERATIN BONDED Hair Extensions
Advantages: The advantages of hot fusion hair extensions are their longevity. Because of the truly seamless nature of how the strands of hair extensions are fused with your own strands of hair, these types of hair extensions can sometimes go as long as six months before needing to be removed. Because they case be strategically positioned all across the full area of your scalp, the are often seen by many as providing (at the time of their installation) the most natural look.
Disadvantages: There are several disadvantages to hot fusion hair extensions. First, these are the most expensive of all hair extensions, rarely costing less than $500 to have them competently installed, with the costs sometimes running into the thousands of dollars! Second, even in the hands of a skilled hair stylist, the heat from the tools used to fuse the hair extension strands to your own hair can often damage the hair on your own head. If that isn’t enough, hot fusion extensions sometimes come with headaches and itchy scalps in the days following their installation, and sometimes lead to the breakage of the wearer’s own hair several weeks after the hair extensions are put in, the latter related to the tension placed on the wearer’s own natural hair from the constant added weight of their hair extensions. Although they can stay in a woman’s hair for up to six months, hot fusion extensions typically cannot be re-used, and the wearer of these types of hair extensions should never go swimming with her hair extensions in, nor should she fall asleep without first drying her hair. The final problem with hot fusion hair extensions is common to all semi-permanent hair extensions; essentially, because the hair extensions are not being nourished by the natural oils from your own scalp, the hair extensions will have a tendency to dry-out and after a while look anything but soft and silky. This problem can be mitigated by giving your fusion hair extensions some regular TLC, however the exact type of hair care products used to do so (Hair Masks, silicone based conditioners, Serums or Oil Treatments) can lead to the dissolving of the keratin bonds holding the hard extension strands in place. Likewise, heavy use of products such as hair sprays, gels, mousse, or even the use of a curling iron can sometimes damage and or dissolve the keratin bonds holding together your hair extensions. Finally, the fact that these hair extensions stay in your hair day in and day out can lead to a great deal of additional stress on your hair follicles due the extra weight pulling at your hair. This constant pull on your hair has been known to lead to either hair breakage at the point of fusion, or in some cases to a woman shedding more of her own hair that would normally be the case for her, a condition medically known as “Traction Alopecia”.
Micro-Bead (Cold Fusion) Hair Extensions
Advantages: Cold fusion hair extensions tend to share the same advantages described earlier in connection with hot fusion hair extensions. Cold fusion hair extensions can last up to six months in a wearer’s hair, and as with hot fusion hair extensions, cold fusion hair extensions tend to move very naturally.
Disadvantages: Unfortunately, the shared advantages described above also bring with them many of the same disadvantages, along with a few more. The process of installing cold fusion hair extensions is extremely labour intensive, which drives up the cost of installation. Women with very fine or thin hair may not be good candidates for cold fusion extensions as (depending on their size) the fasteners holding the strands in place can sometimes be visible through the hair. As with all semi-permanent hair extensions, the wearer should avoid activities such as swimming, heavy sweating, falling asleep with damp hair, and be extra careful when applying any oil or silicone based products (which is essentially the entire hair care industry!), as these can lead to the extensions sliding down the hair shaft. Also, as with hot fusion hair extensions, women should be aware that Traction Alopecia is always a possibility when wearing micro-bead hair extensions. Finally, because women wearing micro-bead extensions are often unable to get in deep and properly wash and condition their hair near the micro-beads, their removal can sometimes reveal some unpleasant surprises. See here for one woman’s experience with micro-bead hair extensions.
Tape-In Hair Extensions
Advantages: Tape-in hair extensions are the least expensive of the semi-permanent types of hair extensions, and are the easiest and quickest of the semi-permanent hair extensions to install.
Disadvantages: Unlike what some sellers of tape-in extensions may claim, there are many disadvantages to tape-in extensions. To begin with, they share the same problems as all of the other semi-permanent types of hair extensions in that they somewhat restrict the activities that you can engage in without putting undue stress on your hair extensions. For example, as with hot fusion and micro-beads, and for the same reasons explained above, swimming in pools or in the ocean should be avoided, as should be falling asleep with damp hair. Also, just as with other semi-permanent solutions, being not nourished by the natural oils coming off of your scalp, tape-in hair extensions will rapidly deteriorate in quality as they are exposed to the stresses of regular shampooing. Tape-in hair extension sellers like to claim that tape-in extensions are re-usable, but after wearing them in your hair for a few months, they will usually be so damaged and degraded that no self respecting woman would want to. As with hot fusion hair extensions, the use of certain hair conditioning products (masks, hair oils or serums) can dissolve the bonding agents that are used on the tape to glue the extensions to your hair, the pieces of tape often become visible as your hair grows out, especially when you wear your hair up, and many women have damaged their own hair while trying to remove their tape-in extensions. Finally, as with all other forms of semi-permanent hair extensions, the possibility of experiencing Traction Alopecia should always be a concern of any woman considering tape-in extensions. See here.
SEW-IN (aka “WEAVE”) HAIR EXTENSIONS
Advantages: Among the advantages to sew-in hair extensions is their low to moderate installation cost, the fact that the wearer typically won’t have any issues in using oil or silicone based hair products such as oil treatments, serums, styling creams or hair masks. Moreover, because there is no heat or glue used in the installation of sew-in hair extensions, the risk of damaging your own hair is reduced in comparison to other semi-permanent hair extensions.
Disadvantages: Sew-in extensions take several hour to install, and unfortunately the braids that are created to anchor the hair extensions can often impair proper washing at the roots of your hair, and thereby become a breeding ground for bacteria whose build-up can lead to scalp infections. In addition to that, the tension of the braids can often lead to headaches, and as with all of the types of semi-permanent hair extensions, the dreaded Traction Alopecia.
Clip-In Hair Extensions
Advantages: If you want to wear hair extensions, clip-ins are your best bet for several reasons. First is the ease of use. With a little bit of practice, clip-in hair extensions can be put in your hair in 5-10 minutes, and they can be removed in less than a minute at the end of the day. Next is the price. When you consider that, Kylisstof clip-in hair extensions (depending on their weight and length) cost anywhere from USD $134.99-$249.99, and if properly cared for, can last upwards of a year, then it’s clear that hair extensions provide you with the most economical way to get lusciously long, voluminous hair. Next is the lifestyle factor. Unlike semi-permanent types of extensions which somewhat limit your choice of activities or the products you use in your hair, the easily removable nature of clip-in extensions means that you can continue doing exactly what you love doing, or using exactly the products you love using, without regard for what’s in your hair. You want to go swimming in the ocean or the pool? Take them out. You want to run a marathon and build up a crazy sweat that requires you to scrub your hair out after? Take them out. You want to use hair oils or intense hydrating masks? Go ahead! You have naturally oily hair that makes you feel the need to wash your hair almost every day but you’re worried that doing so would dry out and damage your hair extensions? No worries, because your clip-in hair extensions will be safely stored away while you’re washing your hair, and need only be washed every 15-20 wears, meaning they will last much longer (up to 12 months or more!) than every other type of hair extension on the market. And the best reason of all is that they are 100% safe, and unlike tape-ins, hot fusion, micro-beads or sew-ins, clip-in hair extensions will NOT lead to hair breakage or the feared Traction Alopecia.
Disadvantages: The disadvantages to clip-in hair extensions are the hassle that some see in having to put them in and take them out each time you want to wear them. But the reality is that they take les than a minute to remove at the end of the day, and with a little bit of practice you’ll be putting them in your hair in minutes flat. See this video for a demonstration of how easily you can clip them in. One other disadvantage to clip-in hair extensions sometimes cited is that they are harder to conceal near the top of your head than are either of hot fusion extensions or micro-bead extensions, and that this factor makes them less appealing for finer haired women. While this might have been the case with traditional forms of clip-in hair extensions using sewn fabric (usually lace), our ultra –thin seamless clip-in hair extensions eliminate this concern, allowing thick medium and fine haired women alike to enjoy the benefits that come with clip-in hair extensions.
6. SO WHAT KIND OF HAIR EXTENSIONS SHOULD I WEAR?
Clip-ins, of course!!! But seriously, in order to answer this question, you need to first ask yourself the following: (1) Will the type of hair extensions I choose blend in well with my own hair?; and (2) Will they suit my lifestyle?. If you’re an extremely active woman who doesn’t want to sacrifice any aspect of your own lifestyle (eg. swimming, working out), if you regularly use hair oils or serums, or deep conditioning masks, if you have particularly oily hair that makes you feel as though you need to wash your hair every day or almost every day, then clip-in extensions are clearly the best choice for you.
7. HOW ARE REAL HUMAN HAIR EXTENSIONS DIFFERENT FROM SYNTHETIC HAIR EXTENSIONS?
Synthetic hair is a petroleum based product, basically a type of extremely thin plastic made to try to replicate the properties of real human hair. The differences between human hair and synthetic hair are many. To summarize though, only human hair can be styled using the same sorts of hair styling tools as you style your own hair with. Synthetic hair, in contrast, made from plastic, will break down under the heat of hair styling tools. Hair products will also not react with synthetic hair in necessarily the same manner as they do with natural human hair. Synthetic hair will never blend as well with your own hair as will hair extensions made from real human hair, and synthetic hair, if washed with hair care products made for natural hair, will tend to dry out and quickly degrade in quality. As a result, if a woman wants long lasting, high quality clip-in hair extensions that can be styled just as her own hair can, there is only one option. Real remy human hair.
8. WHAT’S THIS STUFF I KEEP READING ABOUT SINGLE-DRAWN VS. DOUBLE-DRAWN HAIR EXTENSIONS?
Single-drawn extensions are where no extra care has been taken to remove the shorter hairs from a set of hair strands destined to be made into a weft. This leads to very uneven thickness from the root of the hair strand to the tip, and resulting in a thin, straggly look at the bottom of each hair weft. In the case of double-drawn extensions, a person has actually, by hand, gone through each set of hair that will be made into a weft, and removed as many of the shorter hair strands as possible. It’s not feasible to remove every single shorter strand, but in a high quality set of double-drawn hair extensions, you can expect that the majority of the hair strands will run the full length of each weft from top to bottom, creating a fairly uniform density across the entire weft. As should be obvious, this extra process require extra labour, which in turn costs money, making double-drawn hair extensions significantly more expensive than single-drawn hair extensions.
Every set of Kylisstof hair extensions are “double drawn”, guaranteeing that our Silkys will be thick from top to bottom, ready to transform your look with extra voluminous, lusciously long locks.
9. DOES “DOUBLE-DRAWN” MEAN THAT EVERY HAIR STRAND IN YOUR SETS IS THE EXACT SAME LENGTH?
Absolutely not. The ultimate goal of any hair extension set is to seamlessly match the properties of a woman’s own hair. Just as a woman’s own hair naturally grows at different rates, and because it sheds 60-100 hairs per day, results in her hair being composed of strands of differing lengths, so do our hair extensions reflect the natural look of a woman with a healthy head of hair.
10. HOW MUCH DO HAIR EXTENSIONS COST?
Depending on the weight, you can pick up a set of cheap synthetic hair extensions for as low as $65-$90. Human hair extensions are more expensive, and remy human hair extensions pricier still. For semi-permanent, real remy human hair extensions, depending on who installs them and the weight and length chosen, price could run from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand! For high quality clip-in, 100% remy hair extensions, expect to pay (depending on the weight purchased) an average of USD $0.95/gram to $$1.07/gram of hair for solid tones, and somewhat more for piano, ombré or balayage sets. Kylisstof hair extensions are the highest quality, seamless clip-in remy hair extensions on the market and are priced in the range mentioned above.
11. HOW LONG DO HAIR EXTENSIONS LAST?
As with anything else in life the better you take care of your hair extensions, the longer they will last. We'd rather be honest about this issue than engage in the kind of misrepresentation so prevalent in the hair extensions industry these days. No matter what you read out there on any of our competitor's sites, every brand of remy clip-in hair extensions these days will last you on average between 3-6 months. If you take extremely good care of them and don't wear them often then they may last longer than that, but if you wear them every day all day and abuse them (for example wearing them in the pool, sleeping with them in, not brushing them every time you put them on and take them off, washing them too often or with cheap, damaging shampoos, not properly conditioning them after washing, etc.) then they may not even last that long. Included in every box containing your Silkys are some instructions on caring for them that should help get you started in caring for them in the manner which they deserve. Click here for more detailed information.
12. DO HAIR EXTENSIONS DAMAGE YOUR HAIR?
All semi-permanent types of hair extensions come with the risk that they may damage your hair due to the bonding agents used to affix them to your own hair strands, or due to the stress placed on your hair through the constant weight of the hair extensions. When used properly, clip-in hair extensions pose no risk of damage to your own hair, being the only type of hair extensions that can make that important claim.
13. HOW TO CLIP MY HAIR EXTENSIONS IN?
It’s super easy! With the slightest bit of practice you should be able to do this within 5-10 minutes. Please watch the following video for a detailed demonstration.
14. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO CLIP IN MY HAIR EXTENSIONS?
Once you get the hang of it, you should be able to clip in the entire set in 5-10 minutes tops.
15. HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLOR OF HAIR EXTENSIONS?
Kylisstof hair extensions are available in 11 traditional shades, 2 ombré shades and 3 shades of balayage. One thing to keep in mind however, is that just as your own hair is filled with naturally occurring highlights and lowlights, with golden, red, or silver undertones that leap out when you’re in natural sunlight, so too are Kylisstof hair extensions multi-tonal in nature, meaning that each solid color is actually comprised of a few different hair tones which will become more apparent in a naturally lit setting. This means that, provided you pick the Kylisstof color that most closely matches the color of the bottom 6-8 inches of your own hair (which should naturally be the lightest portion of your own hair), your hair extensions should blend beautifully with your own locks.
Choosing your hair extensions color can be a stressful process, which we want to simplify for you. The first thing we recommend is to look at your hair in a well sunlit room (but not in direct sunlight), while watching the following video video which goes into greater detail explaining our colors, as well as explaining how to choose the color that is best for you.
If you still have doubts, please take a photo of yourself (front, back and side) in a well sunlit room (but not in direct sunlight) and email it to us at email@example.com, and we’ll be more than happy to help you find your perfect shade of Silkys!
16. STYLING YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS
If you’ve made the unfortunate mistake of ever buying synthetic hair extensions, then you’ll know that they cannot necessarily be styled in the same manner or using the same heat styling tools as your own hair. All high quality, human hair extensions however (such as our Silkys) can be styled in exactly the same manner as your own hair. You can style your extensions before clipping them in (if that’s easier for you) or you can clip them in first and style them along with your own hair. Whatever lights your fancy is will work just fine because our hair extensions, being 100% natural remy human will react to hair products and hair styling tools in exactly the same way as will your own natural locks. Whatever you’re after, be it crazy volume, lusciously long, silky locks, the kinds of crazy braids that can only be achieved with lots and lots of hair, or colorizing your world with one of our an ombré or balayage sets, we have exactly what you’re looking for.
Please be sure to take a look at our YouTube channel, as we continue to build a library of videos that can help you achieve that look you’re going for.
17. CAN I WEAR HAIR EXTENSIONS?
Almost certainly yes! With very few exceptions, any woman whose natural hair reaches down to her shoulders can wear clip-in hair extensions in a seamless, undetectable manner.
18. WHAT IF I HAVE CURLY HAIR? CAN I STILL WEAR HAIR EXTENSIONS?
Absolutely. Our silky soft remy human hair extensions are made from hair of Asian origin. As a consequence, their natural state is straight, though they can be styled to whatever texture you want. What matters is whether you are able to style your own hair in such a manner as to match it to your hair extensions. So if you’re seeking the straight and silky look, you would need to blow-dry and perhaps flat-iron your hair straight in order to make them blend seamlessly with your Silkys. Should you want to have your hair curly or wavy, you would style your extensions to match the look that you’re going for.
Please visit our YouTube channel, where we hope you’ll find daily inspiration as to how to style your hair, with or without your silky soft Kylisstof hair extensions.
Please click here for more information on styling your Silkys.
19. HOW LONG DOES MY HAIR NEED TO BE IN ORDER TO WEAR HAIR EXTENSIONS?
We say that, for a seamless blend of your hair with our hair extensions, your hair ought to be at least shoulder length.
20. SO MY HAIR IS SHORT…WHICH SET OF YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS SHOULD I GET?
You need to realize that (depending on her hair type) the average woman with healthy hair has anywhere from 90,000-150,000 strands of hair on her head, and loses anywhere from 60-100 strands of hair per day. This means that her hair will always be thicker closer to her roots than it will be at her tips. A natural head of hair in which the hair is just as thick at the tips as it is at the roots simply doesn’t exist, and because it doesn’t exist, would look odd if you ever saw it. Therefore, if a woman has shorter hair, it means that the point at which her hair needs to blend with the extensions, is generally quite thick. As a result, for any woman with shorter hair, we would recommend going with one of our 165g or 230g sets in order to ensure that the thickness of the hair extensions most closely matches her own hair thickness at the point of blending. She could always try to go with one of our 125g sets, however they might look too thin in relation to her own hair.
21. WHAT EXTENSIONS SHOULD I WEAR IF I HAVE FINER HAIR?
For women with hair on the finer side, we would recommend our lightest 125g, 18” set. This set has the least number of hairs per lineal inch of all three sizes of our hair extension sets, though not substantially so, making it ideal not only for women with finer hair, but also those women seeking a less dramatic look than would be achieved with either of our 20” or 22” sets.
22. WHICH HAIRSTYLES ARE COMPATIBLE WITH HAIR EXTENSIONS?
Pretty well any hair style you can think of can be complemented and/or accentuated through the smart use of hair extensions. It all comes down to positioning the hair extensions in such a way at to allow for them to do their thing in a concealed location. But whether you want to style you’re your down, in a crazy elaborate braid or an elegant updo, all of the above are completely possible, and can be made to look dramatically more impressive through the use of hair extensions.
Check out our ever growing hair blog for ideas on how hair extensions can help accentuate some amazing hairstyles.
23. WHY SHOULD I SPEND MY MONEY ON CLIP-IN HAIR EXTENSIONS?
There are so many reasons for getting clip-in hair extensions, but here are the top reasons:
- TONS OF VOLUME – Use extensions to achieve that crazy volume that you’ve always been craving
- EXTRA LENGTH – For women recovering from a bad haircut or for those who just can’t seem to grow their hair past certain point, hair extensions offer the perfect workaround to their problem.
- DASH OF COLOR – A lot of women (particularly professional models) don’t want to commit to coloring or bleaching their hair, but occasionally would love to try out a balayage or ombré look. Clip-in hair extensions allow them to do this in a non-committal manner.
- STYLES REQUIRING A LOT OF HAIR – Let’s be honest, some hair styles (eg. Fishtail Braids) really benefit from having a lot of hair. Clip-in extensions allow a woman with otherwise average hair thickness to rock a crazy hair style requiring extremely thick locks.
- EAZY PEAZY – Unlike other types of hair extensions, an entire set of clip-ins can be installed perfectly in 5-10 minutes, and can be removed in less than a minute.
- SAFE – Unlike other types of hair extensions, some which can actually sometimes lead to your own hair falling out, clip-in hair extensions pose no threat of damage to your own precious locks!
24. WON’T EVERYONE SEE MY HAIR EXTENSIONS?
No!!! The seamless design of our hair extensions, with our silicone band technology make our extensions much thinner than traditional fabric sewn clip-in hair extensions, making them virtually undetectable, unless worn virtually at the top of your head. That said, because seamless hair extensions are easier to conceal than traditional clip-in hair extensions, they (a) can be worn higher on a woman’s head than would be the case with the traditional variety, and (b) can allow a woman with finer hair to wear a somewhat heavier set than would normally be the case with traditional, fabric clip-in hair extensions. Click here for some information on our seamless design.
25. HOW CAN I STYLE MY HAIR EXTENSIONS?
In the exact same way as you would style your own hair. Because our Silkys are 100% real human hair, they can be flat ironed, blow-dried, or put to a curling iron in exactly the same way as can your own hair.
That said, please keep on reading below for tips and recommendations on how to properly care for your hair extensions in order to maximize their lifespan.
26. CARING FOR YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS
As we at Kylisstof like to say, “hair extensions are just like people; the better you treat them the longer they’ll stick around” So treat your extensions as you would your own hair, only a bit better because unlike your own hair, your hair extensions aren’t being nourished on a continual basis by the natural oils coming off of your own scalp, which can lead to them becoming dry and damaged unless you take extra steps to protect them.
This means the following:
- Brushing your Silkys carefully before and after every wear;
- Storing your Silkys in the elegant box that they came in;
- Not sleeping or swimming with your Silkys clipped-in;
- Wearing your Silkys an average of 15-20 times between washing them;
- Using a premium quality, hydrating shampoo containing no alcohol or sulphates;
- Following up the wash by using a premium hydrating conditioner;
- Finishing off the washing process by using an intense hydrating mask;
- Using serums or oil treatments to help condition and restore the cuticles of your hair extensions and
- Styling your extensions using a slightly lower (120C/250F) heat setting on your heat styling tools and always using a heat protectant spray prior to using a heat styling tool on your extensions.
Please take a look at this video which demonstrates how to care for your hair extensions.
27. WHAT HAIR CARE PRODUCTS CAN I USE ON MY HAIR EXTENSIONS?
Because our Silkys are 100% natural remy human hair, generally speaking, any hair care product used on your own hair is suitable for use on your hair extensions. That said, because your hair extensions aren’t being continually nourished by the natural oils off of your own scalp, we recommend using only premium quality hair care products on them, and to religiously avoid using any products containing certain types of alcohol or sulfates as these can dry out and damage your hair extensions, and lead to their premature degradation. Click here for some details on what compounds are good or bad for dry hair
28. SHOULD I BRUSH MY HAIR EXTENSIONS?
YES!!! In fact, not only should you brush your Silkys, we would say that regular brushing of your hair extensions is an absolute must. While remy human hair minimizes tangling, it doesn’t completely eliminate it. So, in the same manner as your own hair sometimes tangles, so will your hair extensions. Just like your own hair, this is minimized through regular, gentle brushing, at least each time you take your extensions out and store them, and immediately before clipping them in as well. In the same manner as your own hair, you should brush your hair extensions using a good de-tangling brush (we personally love the “Wet Brush”). You should do so gently at all times, while holding the base of the hair together tightly, and just like your natural hair, you should start from the bottom and work your way up, taking extra care not to pull too vigorously should you encounter a snag.
Please take a look at this video which demonstrates how to care for your hair extensions.
29. CAN I COLOR OR BLEACH MY HAIR EXTENSIONS?
As Kylisstof hair extensions are 100% real remy human hair, they can absolutely be colored. However, we strongly advise against bleaching them, and if you choose to have your hair extensions dyed a darker color, we suggest only ever having this done by a professional colorist.
Our Silkys go through an intense dyeing process at the time of manufacturer which, by design, make them not only impervious to fading, but extremely resistant to bleaching. The amount and type of bleaching that would be required to successfully bleach our hair extensions would not only dramatically reduce the lifespan of your Silkys, but would likely do tremendous damage to them as well. Bleaching damages human hair, whether it’s on your head or in a set of hair extensions. The key difference however, is that whereas the hair on your head is being continually nourished and restored by the natural oils coming off of your scalp, your hair extensions are not. This is why we strongly advise against ever bleaching your hair extensions. If you want to have bleached highlights in your extensions to match your own hair, we always recommend buying one of our lightest blonde shades, and then having a professional colorist put in low-lights.
That said, should you want your hair extensions colored darker, we always recommend taking them to a professional colorist to be colored. When you’ve invested so much in a set of hair extensions, you want to make sure that the color job ends up being right the first time rather than having to do it more than once, and possibly put excess wear and tear on your beautiful Silkys.
30. CAN I GO SWIMMING WITH MY HAIR EXTENSIONS CLIPPED-IN?
In theory yes, but simply because something is possible doesn’t mean that it’s equally advisable? Our Silkys are 100% real remy human hair, and as such they can stand up to the same types of things and activities that your own hair does. That said, the whole point of clip-in hair extensions is that you can remove them when engaging in activities which can be rough on hair, such as for example swimming, whether in salt water or chlorinated water, none of which is great for your own hair. Not only is the salt or chlorine in the water harsh on your own hair, but anytime you wet any hair (be in on your head or in your extensions), you temporarily weaken the strands and introduce the possibility of tangling or hair breakage while brushing the hair out. For all these reasons, if your goal is to maximize the lifespan of your hair extensions, we strongly advise against swimming with your Silkys.
31. IS IT BAD TO SLEEP WITH MY HAIR EXTENSIONS CLIPPED-IN?
Yes. As with swimming with your clip-in hair extensions, simply because it is entirely possible to sleep with your clip-in hair extensions doesn’t mean that we recommend doing so, and in fact we would strongly advise against doing so. The reasons are simple. In the same way as your own hair can sometimes get tangled and knotty while you sleep on it, so too can your hair extensions should you choose to sleep with them clipped-in. You may then awaken to a mess of tangles and knots that may be a real pain to straighten out. Our strong recommendation is always be sure to spend the 60 seconds it takes at the end of each night to take your Silkys out of your hair. If not, you’re asking for trouble.
32. ARE THERE ANY ACTIVITIES THAT I SHOULD AVOID DOING WITH MY HAIR EXTENSIONS IN?
As with swimming and sleeping, we don’t advise engaging in demanding physical activity while wearing your clip-in hair extensions. Because your extensions don’t have the benefit of constant nourishment from the oil off of your own scalp, you want to minimize the amount of stress you put on your hair extensions through such things as washing at too short an interval. If you work up a sweat and winds up getting on your extensions, you will likely need to wash them with greater frequency than would otherwise be the case, thereby shortening the lifespan of your Silkys. The beauty of clip-in hair extensions is that you don’t need to modify your activity levels or choices of activities. Instead you just clip them out and go right ahead with your desired activity, leaving the hair extensions for the next time you need them.
